9" Moke: Disco Red

If you know the now-famous "Milky" skirt combo, you'll love this one. Milky was my dad's color combo — every copycat you see out there is really just a play on his lure — and this one was also his top choice.

For as long as I can remember, my dad ran this exact combo on his corner — a red cracked-glass JC's Bullet — and that lure destroyed all fish. Everything big, small, and medium ate this color, and I hated it. As an up-and-coming lure maker focused on detailed fish inserts, this red lure looked too simple to me. I couldn't understand why something that plain worked so well.

We ran that lure until it was so broken it didn't work anymore, and my dad asked me to make one to replace it. Over the years I tried many times to make a red lure I was happy with, but could never get it right, so this fish-slaying combo sat dormant.

Then we created Disco Red, and all those memories of fishing with my dad came rushing back. I knew exactly what skirts belonged on it. As I write this, I can still see the red and white cutting through the water right before we gaffed a fish, the smile on my dad's face, and the laughing and cheering from those catches we shared.
